Student Finance 101

help with college funding

In today’s economy it is vital to have a great understanding of money.  For this very reason I think that schools should implement the class Student Finance 101.

Many of our young school aged children do not hold a job and have very little understanding of the concept of money.  Most of these children have always lived with mommy and daddy and have no idea what it means to budget the money that is coming into the household.

It is frightening to me that these students will be leaving high school and embarking on a world that sadly is revolving around money.  So I think it is vital for these students to have at least a foundation of the idea of what money and credit can do for them as well as against them.

Many of these students graduate from high school, go to college, leave the security of their parents for the first time, all at the same time.  They experience their first taste of real independence for the first time.  How successful will they be if not given a real basis in finances?

Seriously, we offer English classes, math classes, science classes and history classes in our school curriculum’s.  Although these classes are designed to induce higher thinking, reasonable thinking, reasoning and critical thinking, what is it really doing to prepare our students for the world that they will be facing?

Now do not get me wrong.  I do think our schools are wonderful for the things that they do teach.   I just happen to feel that the schools fail to prepare our young adults for the future.  So is the idea of the class titled Student Finance 101 so out in space?  I wish it had been offered to me.

One Response to “Student Finance 101”

  • Very interesting idea, and I am not disagreeing, I just think that most can’t learn about real life till they experience it. I have a 19 year old who works and goes to school a really great kid,……..but she has no idea what real life is like, until she lives on her own and has to purchase everything from electricity to toilet paper will she then learn about life. Although at 19 you know everything so maybe I am wrong!!!…….lol
