The Days of Deliverance Are Gone

What do you think of when you think of country people? I live in a very rural country community. More than I care to mention, I hear jokes about Deliverance. Well people, I am here to tell you that the days of deliverance are gone.
This summer I attended a family reunion. We are blessed with gorgeous rivers in this area so the the decision was made to hold the reunion outside on the river. Some of the relatives got lost which brought the onslaught of the “deliverance” jokes. Now I can tell you that I laughed because they were funny. However, later those jokes got next to my skin.
Of course the joke was made about hearing banjo music coming out of the hills. Yes, we do love our music and some people do play music in the country. However, so do city folk. Just because you come to the country does not mean that you are going to hear music. You can find that in the cities more than the country.
We are not all homely cross-bred people either. All too often we country folks hear jokes about Bubba being Sissy’s uncle, daddy, grandpa and etc, all at the same time. I am here to tell you that if you look at statistics, a whole lot more of this happens in the cities than in the country. Look at police records. Most of the violators in this area are from cities.
Then there is the issue of country people being undereducated. Now I am here to tell you that we are intellectual people. I know more people than not who have attended college, hold degrees and who are working in outstanding jobs. Some even work from home and make more money than some people who hold entry level jobs in the cities.
Yes, we do have people who do not have degrees. In fact, I know an older gentleman who only has a seventh grade education. Yet this man is more intelligent in areas than most college students have ever thought of being. How many of you can look at a cow and tell me withing ten pounds how much it weighs? How many of you can look at a tree in the wintertime and tell me what kind of tree it is? I doubt that many of you can do this. I cannot and I have lived in the country all my life.
We, here in the country, are definitely standing up to say the days of Deliverance are gone!

This is the year of the Presidential election. How many of you are diligently watching all the stuff going on with the political figures ...
